About this book:
Each chapter in this book starts with the objectives where reader can get an overview about the gist of the chapter. In order to understand and get a grip over the concepts, example problems with their solutions is provided. A supplementary resources list which contain Books, Chemical Engineering Journals and Websites related to that Chapter is listed at the end.
This book is divided into 3 parts as follows:
1. Introduction
Here authors provide a brief about Dimensions, Units, Unit conversions, Moles, Density, Concentration, Temperature and Pressure. Their definition, concept and examples problems are given. A guide to choosing a basis while starting calculations is also depicted.
2. Material Balances
Here the concept of material balance in steady and unsteady state , with and without chemical reaction processes, batch and semi-batch processes etc is explained. Here, he even lists out a general strategy for solving material balance problems.
The following is the strategy:
  • Read and understand the problem statement
  • Draw a sketch of the process and specify the system boundary
  • Place labels (symbols, numbers and units) on the diagram for all the known flows, materials and compositions. For the unknown flows, materials and compositions insert symbols and units.Add any other useful relations and information.
  • Obtain any data you need to solve the problem but are missing
  • Choose a basis
  • Determine the number of variables whose values are unknown
  • Determine the number of independent equations and carry out degrees of freedom analysis


He also focuses on concepts of stoichiometry, recycle, bypass and purging along with other industrial applications of material balance concepts.
 3. Gases, Vapors, Liquids and Solids
Here is explains ideal gas law, equations of state, concept of real gases, single component two-phase systems, two-phase gas-liquid systems (saturation, condensation and vaporization), partial saturation, humidity, phase rules etc. 
4. Energy Balances
Energy balances with and without reactions is covered. Concepts like heats of solutions, enthalpy changes calculations is also covered. Application of psychrometric charts (humidity) is explained in detail.
5. Supplementary Material
Here the book containes guidance on how to solve chemical engineering problems using Chemical Process Simulators like Aspen Hysys with flowsheeting codes. Charts and formulas list are provided for easy reference.
